Is investing in mobile apps a stupid risk without rewards?

I doubt there is anyone out there willingly stepping on banana peels; it is a well-known risk and (unless you are a stuntman doing your job) there are absolutely no rewards. Turns out, this is how a lot of small businesses - according to a new survey by Clutch - feel about investing in mobile apps. Follow the link and you can find some pretty interesting results.

While 2014 was touted as the year of the mobile, SMBs surveyed by Clutch do not seem to be so kin on jumping onboard the mobile app train. Among the 354 small business owners or managers participating in this survey just 15% have a mobile app and only a miserly 7% plan to build an app in 2015. Although it is hard to believe, only one in ten SMBs think a mobile app is a likely part of their digital marketing strategy for the future. Additionally, according to the survey, the smaller the company the less inclined they are to contemplate a mobile app.

Perhaps one of the reasons why SMBs are slow on the mobile app uptake has do with what they perceive mobile apps to be good for. The fact that up to 76% of respondents think customer service as the top reason for building a mobile app shows that there is no clear ROI path they can follow. Sure, apps are great, but if you think they are mostly improvements in customer satisfaction, they will be relegated to the bottom of the list in terms of priorities. Only about a third of those interviewed mentioned increases in sales and/ or competitiveness in the market.

When you don’t see a clear connection between investing in something and how that investment is going to benefit your business you don’t have any reason to invest. In this survey, 59 % of the small businesses have no intention of increasing their mobile app budget this year.
